Questions people actually ask.
Each of these answers completely and stands on its own. Where the honest answer is that Scorto is not what you need, it says so.
Can you deliver without a marketplace taking commission?
Yes. You can take orders through your own channels and deliver them with your own drivers, or with couriers you hire per delivery, and pay no commission on the order value at all. The trade is that you take on dispatch, tracking and proof of delivery yourself, which is a software problem rather than a staffing one.
What does marketplace commission actually cost on a typical order?
Work it out rather than take a figure on trust. At a 30% full-service rate (an assumption, not a measured fact about any named company), a £24 order gives the marketplace £7.20 and leaves you £16.80. Across twenty deliveries on one Friday that is £144, and it recurs every trading day.
Should you employ drivers or use freelance couriers?
Most operations need both, for the same reason restaurants keep both permanent and casual kitchen staff: demand is spiky. Employed drivers give you guaranteed cover at known cost during service; freelance couriers absorb the peaks you cannot justify staffing for.
What insurance and licensing does a food delivery courier need?
In the UK, a courier delivering for payment needs hire and reward insurance. Ordinary social, domestic and pleasure car or bike cover does not extend to carrying goods for a fee, and a claim made on the wrong policy is likely to be refused. Beyond that it depends on the vehicle and the goods.
How do you handle a missing or damaged delivery claim?
Decide it on the record rather than on whoever complains hardest. That means capturing evidence at the moment of delivery (a photograph at the door, a timestamp, and the courier's location) so that a claim made three hours later is checked against something rather than argued about.
What makes proof of delivery actually hold up?
Evidence captured at the moment of delivery, attached to the record automatically, and impossible to add later. A photograph emailed the next morning proves someone had a photograph, not that the delivery happened when and where it was claimed.
How do you run deliveries across more than one site?
Treat each site as its own dispatch point with its own drivers and its own coverage area, and keep one view across all of them. The common failure is the opposite: one shared pool of drivers dispatched centrally, which produces couriers driving past one branch to collect from another.
How do you handle cash on delivery safely?
Settle the order value with the courier before they collect it, then let them keep the cash they take at the door. The retailer is never exposed to a courier who does not come back, and the courier is not carrying someone else's money.
